Pokemon sword and shield has introduced various mechanics in the newly released Generation 8. If you're a regular Pokémon sword and shield player, you have probably encountered the new temporary evolutions: Dynamax and Gigantamax. In addition, if you don't know how to get Gigantamax pokemon, this guide is for you.

Obtaining Gigantamax pokémon does not come easy, or by simple Dynamaxing. Although these two Pokemon sword and shield techniques are quite similar, there are several differences in function and how to obtain them. We will share these differences with you. However, our main focus will be on Gigantamax pokémon.

What Is Gigantamax Pokémon?

Gigantamax pokemon is a special form of Dynamax pokemon. Gigantamaxing is a unique evolution mechanism in Pokemon sword and shield whereby a pokemon changes into a new and mega-sized form. In addition, while the pokemon gets a whole new appearance, there's no significant size difference from a Dynamax pokémon.

Gigantamax pokémon are rare and can only be found from Max Raid Battles or as special pokemon gifts, as we will see in detail below. Another unique thing about Gigantamaxing is that only a select number of Pokemon sword and shield species can Gigantamax. In addition, only a few members in a species have this unique ability of the select species.

What Does Gigantamaxing Do?

Gigantamaxing occurs in the Galar region during gym battles, max raid battles, online battles or champion's cups. The trainers must use their Dynamax bands to transform their pokemon into Gigantamax pokemon. Additionally, the Dynamax band is attainable early on in the game.

Gigantamaxing in Pokémon sword and shield gives your pokemon a new appearance with unique and awesome visuals compared to a Dynamax pokemon. Your pokemon also gets access to special G-Max moves unique to a single species. In addition, Gigantamax pokémon can use Max moves like Dynamax pokemon. All the pokemon moves will turn into Max Moves except those that will change to G-Max moves.

Like Dynamax pokemon, a Gigantamax pokemon in Pokemon sword and shield receives the same HP boost. However, the max HP is increased by 50%, while a portion of the pokemon's damage is healed to match its boosted health.

You can Gigantamax your pokemon as a trainer during an online or gym battle in Pokemon sword and shield. Your pokemon will change form(Gigantamax) during the start of a turn and return to its normal form after three turns. In addition, each player can Gigantamax their pokemon only once during a battle.

In max raid battles, only one player(trainer) can Gigantamax or Dynamax their pokemon at a given time. For this reason, it's advisable to strategise with teammates about whose pokemon is best to power up.

Difference Between Gigantamaxing and Dynamaxing

Dynamax allows a pokemon in the Galar region of Pokemon sword and shield to change into a massive form and use new powerful moves known as Max moves. The Dynamax pokemon also receives a 50% HP increase and healing to a portion of the damage incurred.

In turn, this matches the pokemon to its now boosted health. In addition, if you give Dynamax candy to your pokemon, its health will increase by 5% per candy.

All pokemon in the Galar region can Dynamax, but only when the player is in a Max raid battle, online match, champion's cup or gym challenge. Additionally, each player can Dynamax pokémon only once per battle. The Dynamax pokemon lasts three turns.

During Dynamaxing, a player in Pokémon sword and shield will need to have a Dynamax band obtained at the start of the game. This is because the original pokemon moves are transformed to max moves during this evolution. In addition, the max moves are determined by what the pokemon knows before Dynamaxing.

In summary, the primary differences between Dynamax and Gigantamax pokémon can be seen in their appearance and moves.

How Do You Get Gigantamax Pokémon?

Pokémon Sword and Shield

Gigantamax pokemon are often attainable during online events, special gifts and even max raid battles in Pokémon sword and shield. However, pokemon available in the overworld, such as Wild Area, can't Gigantamax. This makes finding Gigantamax pokemon difficult.

That said, below are a few ways of finding Gigantamax pokemon.

1. Max Raid Battles

Participating in max raid battles is one of the ways you can use to find Gigantamax pokemon. While this is one of the common methods, it doesn't mean you'll always be successful in your quest. In addition, you can also search the Wild Area for Gigantamax battles, although they resemble normal max raid battles.

Max raid battles in pokemon sword and shield are difficult and will need up to three players. These battles are activated using a Wishing Piece on one of the many pokemon dens in the Wild Area. Although there's a 5% chance of a Gigantamax pokemon appearing in one of the dens, you are also likely to meet with Dynamaxed opponents.

Another thing to note is the Purple beam of light coming from the pokémon dens does not always indicate a Gigantamax pokémon encounter, say Gigantamax Lapras location. This light could be a sign of a rare encounter. For this reason, like with Dynamax pokemon hunt, you have to raid each den and see what's inside.

Finally, when playing pokemon shield & pokémon sword on your gaming PC or Nintendo switch, it's important to know what pokemon you're hunting upfront. This is because you will only get a silhouette and typing of the pokemon, just like in a Dynamax raid.

2. Online Events

Online events are also a good way to battle and catch Gigantamax pokémon. For example, if you have a Nintendo Switch Online membership, you will likely find Gigantamax pokémon. This is because Nintendo increases the chances of finding certain Gigantamax pokemon, especially after a launch.

In such events, you can find Gigantamax Butterfree, especially in a max raid battle. Game Freak is also teasing to make online events a regular thing, so stay tuned.

3. Gifts

Another way to find Gigantamax pokémon is through gifts, either through special events or promotional codes released by Nintendo. Some of the Gigantamax Pokémon you'll find through gifts include:

  1. Gigantamax Meowth - Found as a Mystery gift for Pokemon sword and shield as an early purchase bonus.

  2. Gigantamax Charizard - You'll find this pokemon in Hop's house after successfully beating the Elite Four.

  3. Gigantamax Pikachu and Eevee - If your Nintendo switch has saved data from Let's go Pikachu on Pokemon, the trainers will gift you a special Eeevee and Pikachu that can Gigantamax on Pokemon sword and shield at the meeting spot. However, these pokemon will not evolve, so you'll have to visit the Wild Area station in the game to redeem them. This will take you about 2 hours of gameplay.

4. Max Soup

Finally, you can use Max soup to find Gigantamax pokémon. This, however, only happens in the Isle of Armor DLC. The max soup enables a pokemon that could only Dynamax have the ability to Gigantamax. In addition, you will need to make max soup for this by first collecting three max mushrooms around The Isle of Armor.

Forms of Gigantamax Pokémon

Although Gigantamax pokémon is superior to Dynamax pokemon in Pokemon sword and shield, they're also rare and limited to certain species. Gigantamax forms include:

  • Pikachu

  • Eevee

  • Charizard

  • Meowth

  • Butterfree

Frequently Asked Questions?

1. How do you distinguish a Gigantamax pokemon?

The Red X can distinguish a Gigantamax pokémon displayed on the status screen. Therefore, selecting the Dynamax option on a Gigantamax pokemon will transform the pokemon into a Gigantamax form rather than a Dynamax form.

2. How do you battle and capture Gigantamax pokémon?

The first thing to note is that Gigantamax pokémon are stronger than the Max raid pokemon. This is partly because of the G-max moves, making it trickier to battle and capture them. Therefore, it's better to go in with a powerful pokemon, say level 60 and above, with more resistance and typing advantage than the pokemon you're battling.

Another tip is to join a group of friends to capture Gigantamax pokemon. You don't want to be in a group with random people since they might bring weak pokemon to the battle. Instead, team up with friends or go to the menu pokémon sword and shield and use the search option to join trainers to capture Gigantamax pokemon.

3. If you fail or lose capturing Gigantamax pokemon, can you try again?

You may lose the battle by having too many pokemon fainting or running out of turns. If this happens, you can keep trying as many times as possible until the raid disappears. However, suppose you defeat the raid but fail to capture the pokemon; it (the raid) will disappear, meaning that you have to hunt down another one.
